Since midsummer or so, our little household has expanded, by yet another member. As if me and Ben, and the three kids, and the dog, and the cat weren't enough. I guess it's inaccurate to call him 'the guy on the couch,' -- he's more like 'the guy in the basement.'. He doesn't lounge on the couch all that often.
Here's the deal....a year ago, we introduced a friend of mine from work (Erin) to a friend of Ben's from college (Justin). We'd hung out with Justin quite a bit in the years following graduation, since this area is his hometown and we all lived up here. However, by the time I'd met Erin and decided the two of them would really hit it off, Justin had moved down to Indy. We introduced them anyway, what do you know, they did hit it off, and Justin proposed this May. I take full credit for this, it being my first and only matchmaking experience which has been a complete and total success. Clearly I'm a genius.
Anyway, after the engagement, Justin made plans to move up here, found a job, all that good stuff. Wedding is planned for next summer. But to help them save money before the big day, to avoid Justin having to rent a place, we offered him a room in our basement. Of course, he spends a fair amount of time with Erin after work, mostly he's at our place late evening and before work, so it doesn't cramp our style too much.
I actually laughed out loud when I wrote that, as if our 'style' even has any substance in it to be cramped. I do feel somewhat bad on the mornings when I don't work and he worked late the night before, because the kids are running and screeching, sometimes fighting, sometimes singing at the top of their lungs, and it's essentially mayhem while he's trying to sleep below us. He's informed me, however, that playing Bob Marley on his iPod with headphones usually does the trick. Apparently all my kids' thumping and ear-piercing shrieks just add to the Marley experience.
The good news is, the kids adore Justin. Travis was a little shy at first, but he's really starting to open up to him. Noah just loves playing and showing off whenever Justin's around, and Sophie loves him to pieces and would cuddle and chat with him all day if she could.
